Summer is going way too fast!

I did a review (rant really) about Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett
last week and that got me into reading and re-reading nonfiction books about real art thefts. I have started working on a post that lists several of these books that I will be filling in with some comments and eventually some mini-reviews -Art Theft ... a book list. It is pretty sparse right now, but I will keep working on it.

The other review I did last week was for Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair - mini whatever.

I haven't had a chance to do one of these in ages! So far summer has been flying by in a wave of work, kids, swimming and reading, just not as much action on the blog.

Both of the kids are signed up in the library's summer reading program. I don't know if I am going get any reviews out of the them, but I am going to extract thumbs up/thumbs down out of them for each of the books they read. My little Leopard has discovered Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie books - definite thumbs up. The Pigeon Needs a Bath! is also a thumbs up - Pigeon takes baths an awful lot like my daughter :) My son has been reading Harry Potter (thumbs way up) but is taking a bit of a break because he was getting a little too emotionally invested. Right now he is reading the first book in The Dragonology Chronicles: The Dragon's Eye. We'll see how that goes.

I am not sure how we got to the end of April to fast!  I tried my first read-a-thon, the Dewey's 24-hour Read-a-thon, yesterday and discovered that a huge, fast-paced, 24-hour read-a-thon is really not my thing.  I think I will stick to things have a more drawn out and less frenetic vibe, like Bout of Books.

This past week has been really busy, so much so that I haven't posted any book reviews, which is rather unusual. I finished several - 5 yesterday, but haven't had time to write anything up.  I will be trying to find time to post reviews on ...

We managed to make it out to Maple Weekend before the weather turned into a mess again. The kids had fun on the horse drawn wagon ride and everyone loves maple cotton candy (dangerous stuff!).

Right now I am still working on Silent Spring by Rachael Carson and I started reading Packing for Mars by Mary Roach, which thematically follows from Where'd You Go, Bernadette surprisingly well (it also makes you lose a lot of faith in the space program! eek!)

Goodness, I haven't done one of these in ages! Weekends are usually frantically busy but today ended up being rather mellow. The weather is rainy and gray (which is a nice chance from snowy and gray I suppose) so we have hung out at home all day and the kids actually gave me a chance to use my own computer for once.

I am currently working on ...
Field Notes from A Catastrophe: Man, Nature and Climate Change by Elizabeth Kolbert.  I am over halfway. The book is a bit dated at this point, but well written and I would love to do the traveling that the author did. She got to visit some amazing places and see things that are no longer there.

Then, today I made the mistake of picking up Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, and I have totally devoured over half the book. Other than it making me feel perfectly antique, I am really enjoying the heck out of it.

Sunday Post 2 Review of Feburary 17th

Work has picked up dramatically and I am now behind in practically everything. I have classes to prep, homework assignments to design and exams to write (any wonder that I would rather hide under the table and read a book?)

We staged a raid on the bookstore today, so I now have copies of Cress by Marissa Meyer and Curtsies and Conspiracies by Gail Garriger.

Am I the only who keeps picturing salad greens each time I see/hear Cress ?

So this past week I managed one formal book review.

I wrote up a lament, well alright  - a whine, about what the BBC did to Dirk Gently ...  What, oh what, did they do to Dirk ? Dirk Gently that is.
